2.3 million posts on Twitter from the first part of the season were analyzed, among which more than 60,000 contained an insult to a Premier League footballer. A fifth of these offensive tweets were directed at the Portuguese. Ronaldo was the victim of an attack in 12,520 posts, followed by Devils footballer Harry McGuire (8,954 tweets).
There are as many as seven United players in the Top 10, and in addition to the leading duo, Rashford, Fernandez, Fred, Pogba and De Gea were also targeted by the abusers. Harry Kane, Jesse Lingard and Jack Grealish were also on the “black list”.
