Xabi Alonso’s agent has confirmed that Liverpool have already made contact to discuss the possibility of him replacing Arne Slott.
Less than 12 months after guiding Liverpool to their second Premier League title in the club’s modern era, Slot is facing serious pressure over his future as manager.
Under the Dutch coach, the reigning champions have lost 10 Premier League matches this season, for the first time since the 2015/16 season.
In light of this disappointing season, it has been repeatedly reported that Slot could be sacked at the end of the season, or even earlier, with Liverpool legend Alonso seen as the leading candidate to take over at Anfield.
Alonso is currently without a club, having left his post as Real Madrid coach after less than eight months in charge in January, making a potential move relatively easy.
According to German outlet BILD , Alonso’s agent, Inaki Ibanez, has recently confirmed that there is concrete interest from Liverpool, while chief executive Michael Edwards is determined to make a move for Alonso as early as the spring of 2024.
The report highlights that the Spaniard’s successful spell with Bayer Leverkusen has established him as the ideal successor to legendary Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
However , it is reported that Alonso would only be willing to accept a transfer on his own terms, seeking greater influence in team planning.
This is linked to his desire to avoid a situation similar to what happened at Real Madrid, where he reportedly felt his demands were not taken into account before his contract was fully finalised.
