Gennaro Gattuso is expected to resign as Italy national team coach, Fabrizio Romano reported on the X platform on Thursday morning.

The 48-year-old coach appears to be taking responsibility for the failure to qualify for next summer’s World Cup.

The Italian Football Federation appointed Gattuso on 15 June 2025 as successor to Luciano Spalletti, who had been dismissed. However, he too failed to change the situation.

After losing on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Azzurri have failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third time in a row.

Gattuso, who was visibly emotional after the match, is expected to step down from his position soon, forcing Italy to once again look for a new national team coach.

During his playing career, Gattuso has recorded 73 appearances for the Italian national team, while he has been working as a coach since 2013.

Even before taking charge of the national team, he had a long list of clubs on his CV, including Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete, Pisa, Milan, Napoli, Valencia, Marseille and Hajduk Split.
