Jennifer Lawrence has revealed that she once had her eye on the role that turned fellow actress Emma Stone into an international star.
After appearing in supporting roles in hit films such as Superbad and Zombieland, Stone rose to Hollywood’s A-list thanks to the 2010 teen comedy Easy A. The film marked a major breakthrough in her career and established her as a leading actress.
Easy A was released the same year Lawrence appeared in Winter’s Bone, the film that brought her widespread recognition and earned her first Academy Award nomination.
Two years later, Lawrence cemented her place among Hollywood’s elite by starring as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, one of the most successful film franchises of the decade.
Despite being close friends for years, Emma Stone, 37, and Jennifer Lawrence, 35, have also competed professionally—something Lawrence recently admitted publicly.
“The role I wanted, and that she got, was Easy A,” Lawrence said during a live interview on Tuesday at the 92NY Kaufmann Concert Hall in New York, according to People.
“I was obsessed with Easy A and I really think I should have gotten it, right? The movie could have been really good,” she added jokingly.
Easy A is a modern, comedic adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter. In the film, Stone plays a sharp-witted high school student who finds herself at the center of a scandal that spirals out of control.
Despite missing out on the role, both actresses went on to enjoy hugely successful careers—proving that sometimes, even the roles that get away can lead to something just as iconic.
