A recent study has debunked the traditional idea that youth is the most mentally strong period in a person’s life. According to Science Alert, the smartest age in life actually peaks between the ages of 55 and 60, not in the 20s as is often thought.
The researchers point out that while basic cognitive abilities, such as memory and information processing speed, are strongest during young adulthood, overall psychological and emotional functioning continues to improve as we age.
In this comprehensive study, which analyzed 16 different traits across the lifespan, it was found that elements such as emotional intelligence, conscientiousness, and resistance to cognitive biases not only remain stable, but often strengthen with age.
