Many people struggle to fall asleep in a completely quiet room. They need the TV on, soft music, the hum of a fan, or the steady sound known as white noise. Although it may seem like a strange habit, science offers clear psychological and neurological explanations.

Experts explain that in total silence the brain becomes more active. With no external sounds, thoughts, worries and anxieties increase, making the moments before sleep feel more stressful. A gentle background noise gives the brain something neutral to focus on, reducing the intensity of internal thoughts.

Psychologists also link this behavior to childhood experiences. If someone grew up sleeping with background noise from family activity, television or traffic, the brain learns to associate that environment with safety. Later in life, silence can feel unsettling, while soft noise brings a sense of presence and comfort.

Another important factor is that steady noise masks sudden sounds that could wake the brain. Creaks, hallway noises, or cars outside create interruptions that can disrupt sleep. White noise or the sound of a fan stabilizes the acoustic environment and helps prevent these disturbances.

This habit is also commonly associated with anxiety. People who overthink, have an active imagination or struggle to calm their mind often use sound as a way to quiet mental tension. The noise makes it easier to shift from an alert state into restful sleep.

Is it harmful? Usually not. Soft, consistent noise at a low volume can help many people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. The only real concerns involve televisions, which produce bright light and sudden changes in volume that can interrupt sleep.

Sleep specialists recommend white noise, pink noise and natural sounds as healthier options. However, if someone becomes unable to sleep without noise and this dependence causes stress during travel or in unfamiliar environments, a sleep therapist or psychologist may help uncover the deeper reason behind this need.
