He offered a clear example:
“Some athletes follow low-carbohydrate diets, but their sport demands maximum intensity. Glucose monitoring helps them identify the exact moment when their body needs carbohydrates.”

How It Helps on the Pitch

In high-intensity sports like football — where tempo, sprints, and recovery constantly change — glucose levels can fluctuate rapidly. The monitor provides valuable insights, such as:

• sudden drops in glucose that affect performance
• the impact of heat, hydration, and training intensity

“This allows nutrition to be adjusted very precisely — what to eat, how much, and when,” Gómez emphasizes. “It makes fueling the body far more personalized.”

Does It Actually Improve Performance?

Experts are clear: glucose monitors are not magic tools.

There is currently no strong scientific evidence proving they directly improve athletic performance in healthy athletes. However, many elite players report positive experiences when using them as part of a broader performance strategy.

“The fundamentals remain the same,” Gómez concludes.
“Proper training, balanced nutrition, and adequate rest. Glucose monitors can be an extra tool — but they are not essential for athletes without medical conditions.”
