Thomas Tuchel Warns English Star Could Miss the World Cup

Thomas Tuchel has given a scathing assessment of Phil Foden, suggesting it is “not guaranteed he will come” to the World Cup.

Foden’s struggles with the England shirt have been well documented in recent years, with the Manchester City star failing to replicate his club form when joining the national team.

Despite starting in both of England’s friendlies during the March international break, against Uruguay and Japan, Germany coach Tuchel seems far from convinced.

Foden, who started in the 1-0 defeat to Japan on March 31, is among the players battling for the number 10 position ahead of the World Cup, along with Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Jude Bellingham.

Last night, Foden had the fewest touches of any England starter, also failing to make a positive impact in the attacking phase.

Poor performances recently prompted Tuchel to speak out about his form, with the German even hinting that he may not be included in the 26-man World Cup squad.

Asked if he would take players who are out of form to the World Cup, Tuchel said that in Foden’s case there is no guarantee that he will be called up.

“I can, but the question is whether we will. It’s not guaranteed that he will come. Like I said, we won’t give up on our dream or the question ‘Why not?'”

“Now the most important thing is for the players to return to their clubs, have a good end to the season, and then join us in the preparatory phase, so that we can prepare them properly and take the next steps,” he stated.

England return to action against New Zealand on June 6. The Three Lions’ World Cup campaign begins on June 17 against Croatia.
