Denmark and Wolfsburg midfielder Christian Eriksen has been released from hospital for home care after undergoing extensive cardiac tests following his collapse in a friendly against Ukraine, the Danish Football Association (DBU) announced on Monday morning.

The medical team at Odense Hospital, in coordination with Danish national team doctor Morten Boesen, confirmed that Eriksen’s condition is completely stable and that his heart survived the incident without any permanent damage, largely thanks to the fact that the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) responded in a flash.

His club, Wolfsburg, said it was in constant contact with the 34-year-old midfielder and his family, stressing that the club fully supported him and was not pressuring him to return to training. The DBU leadership shared the same opinion, stressing that the most important thing at this time was for the player to spend time in peace with his family.

The match between Denmark and Ukraine played on Sunday in Odense was stopped in the 65th minute after Eriksen collapsed on the pitch, and was then officially abandoned after the player, fortunately conscious, was taken to hospital.

Although Eriksen is feeling well, Danish sports analysts and medical experts in local media are increasingly raising the issue of a possible end to his professional playing career.

Doctors point out that the fact that this is the second collapse on the pitch in five years suggests that the pursuit of professional football has become too risky for his health, but the final decision will be made by the player himself after further consultations.
