Portugal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign got off to a frustrating start as they were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their opening Group K match.
Despite entering the tournament as heavy favorites, Roberto Martínez’s side failed to secure all three points against a determined Congolese team.
Portugal made the perfect start when João Neves rose to head home Pedro Neto’s cross in the 6th minute, giving the European giants an early advantage. The Portuguese controlled possession for much of the first half and looked on course for victory.
However, DR Congo refused to back down. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Yoane Wissa powered in a header from a corner kick to level the score, scoring a historic goal for his nation and silencing the Portuguese supporters.
The second half saw Portugal push relentlessly for a winner, with stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and Rafael Leão leading the attack. But DR Congo’s defense stood firm, while goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi produced several crucial interventions to preserve the draw.
The final whistle sparked celebrations among the Congolese players and fans, who earned a memorable point against one of the tournament favorites. For Portugal, the result will feel like two points dropped as they now turn their attention to their remaining Group K fixtures.
A dream start for DR Congo. A disappointing one for Portugal. Group K is already wide open.
