“I left my husband for my coworker in front of 50 people, but here’s what happened…”
A woman who was having an affair with her coworker shocked her husband by revealing it to him during a family gathering – but was left completely surprised when months later everything took an unexpected turn.
The woman shared a lengthy post on Reddit, asking for advice after revealing her husband’s infidelity in front of a list of family members. She claimed she had a reason for the infidelity and started a new life with her coworker – but things took a different turn.
In the post, she writes:
“I left home three weeks ago after telling my husband’s entire family I was leaving him for my coworker
My husband had been out of work for eight months. Not laid off — fired. Because he showed up to his warehouse job drunk. Again. He promised he would find a job, but he spent his days playing video games while I worked double shifts at the restaurant.
My coworker started working as a bartender six months ago. Smart, ambitious, and had his own car, unlike my husband who used mine every day. We started talking during quiet hours. Then texting. Then, after-work meetings. ‘You deserve someone who can provide for you,’ he told me one night in his apartment. ‘Not some loser who plays games all day.’
I believed him.”
She continues:
“The meeting was at my mother-in-law’s house. Fifty people packed into her yard. My husband was bragging about some online tournament he had won. My cousin asked him about his job search. ‘Oh, I’m close,’ he lied. ‘I have some good opportunities.’
I exploded. I stood up and said, ‘Actually, he hasn’t applied anywhere in three months. That’s enough. I’m leaving him for someone with a real job and ambition.’
The yard fell silent. The man’s face turned white. ‘What are you talking about?’ he said.
‘I’m talking about the fact that you’re a loser who can’t even buy food. I’m talking about the fact that I found someone better. Someone who earns money instead of living off my back.’
His sister screamed. My aunt dropped the plate from her hand. My mother-in-law crossed the yard four steps and slapped me. ‘Get out of my house. Now.’ ‘With pleasure,’ I said, my cheek burning. ‘Go ahead and support your loser.’
I left with nothing but my purse. I moved in with my coworker that night. I posted on social media about starting my new life with a ‘real man.’”
But things took a turn for the worse for her. She explains:
“Two months. That’s how long it took.”
It turned out my coworker was also dating other waitresses. I found him in bed with one of them when I got back from my shift early. ‘You knew we weren’t exclusive,’ he said. As if I was stupid for thinking otherwise.
I had nowhere to go. My husband changed the keys. My family said, ‘You chose it.’ My coworker even kept my deposit on the apartment we were going to share.
Now I work at a fast-food joint on the highway. Minimum wage. No tips.
My husband got a job last month at his construction friend’s company. He posted a picture of his new truck yesterday.
The sting has long since faded, but I still feel it sometimes. That moment when I thought I was smart, better. When I burned every bridge for someone who only saw me as another opportunity.
My colleague still works as a bartender at the old restaurant. He has a new girlfriend. I fry hamburgers and I wonder if I always deserved this.”
Seeking advice after all this, she wrote:
“But when I stood there, humiliating my husband in front of everyone, was it really necessary? Or was I just being cruel?”
The post was flooded with comments. One commenter called her brave and wrote:
“I congratulate you for having the courage to do this!!! Keep looking for a better job and you will succeed.”
But others weren’t so understanding. One said:
“Absolutely cruel, and now you’re getting what you deserve. Your ex-husband is living life better now.”
Another suggested:
“Embarrassing her in front of the whole family was too much. You should have talked to her, given her a chance to improve, and then let her go if she chose games over marriage.”
While a third added:
“There’s a right and wrong way to do everything. You chose the wrong way.”
