New measures for teens using ChatGPT

American artificial intelligence company OpenAI has introduced safety measures for teens using the ChatGPT tool.

The new features allow parents to link their account with their child’s account and adjust settings for a safer user experience. They will be able to set time limits on the tools, turn off voice mode or image generation, and control the chatbot’s memory usage.

Once the accounts are linked, the teen’s account automatically receives additional protections, including a reduction in explicit content, online harassment, sexual, romantic or violent material, and extreme beauty standards.

If ChatGPT detects potential mental health issues in a user, a human reviewer assesses whether the parent will receive an immediate notification via email, text message, or in-app notification.

OpenAI stated on its website that parents will not have access to the teenager’s conversations with the chatbot itself, which respects the user’s privacy.

The company also plans to implement a system in the coming months to automatically assess the user’s age, so that ChatGPT can automatically apply settings for teenagers under 18.

A California couple filed a lawsuit against Open AI in late August over the suicide of their son Adam Raine, believing that ChatGPT failed to respond appropriately when the teenager indicated to the chatbot that he wanted to take his own life, media reports said.
