Why You Should Never Sit at the Back of a Plane: Experts Give Their Advice

If you’re planning a quiet and comfortable flight, the back row may not be the best choice.

According to travel experts, passengers who sit in the back face more noise, limited space and more turbulence.

Andrea Platania from Transfeero explains:

“The back row is usually the least desirable due to the lack of seat recline, proximity to the toilets and higher levels of cabin noise.”

She adds that middle seats are also less desirable, unless you’re travelling in a group, as legroom and comfort are more limited.

Nicholas Smith from Thomas Cook Holidays also supports this view, noting that the back feels the most vibration during turbulence, food service is slower and food choices are more limited.

He recommends that nervous travelers or those who are concerned about turbulence choose seats near the wings of the plane, where the ride is more stable.

Travel blogger Izzy Nicholls adds:

“The seats at the back are noisier due to the engines and crew activity, and passengers in those rows are the last to disembark.”

Some airlines have already started offering solutions for those looking for more comfort. For example, Virgin Australia has launched a new option called “Neighbour-Free Seating,” which allows passengers to reserve the empty seat next to them for around A$30, adding comfort and privacy during the flight.

Experts also advise that travelers consider proximity to emergency exits and the position of the seats relative to the wings of the plane, as these factors directly affect stability during shaking.

So, if you want a quieter, more worry-free journey, the last row may not be the ideal choice, while seats near the wings or the front of the plane offer a more comfortable experience.
