Britney Spears Arrested – Pills Found in Her Car, Could Face Jail If They Are Narcotics

Pop star Britney Spears was arrested this week for driving under the influence (DUI) in Westlake Village, California.

According to TMZ, pills were discovered inside her vehicle during the incident. The pills are currently being tested to determine whether they contain any narcotic substances.

The outlet reported that if the pills are confirmed to contain illegal drugs, the singer could potentially face jail time.

Possession of drugs — particularly while driving — can lead to charges such as drug possession and driving under the influence of drugs (DUID). According to Kann California Law Group, penalties in such cases can range from 48 hours to more than a year in jail, along with significant fines and a suspension of the driver’s license.

However, if the pills do not contain narcotics, the Toxic singer is unlikely to face jail time, an attorney told Daily Mail.

Los Angeles entertainment and trial lawyer Tre Lovell explained:

“If she was weaving between lanes and allegedly failed sobriety tests, that supports the reason police stopped and arrested her, so it appears officers acted properly in this situation.”

He added that without factors such as a crash, property damage, extremely high speed, or a very high blood-alcohol level, Spears is unlikely to receive a jail sentence.

Laboratory results have not yet been released, so it remains unclear whether she was actually under the influence.

Lovell also noted that if the DUI charge is confirmed and this is her first offense, jail time would still be unlikely.

“She will most likely be placed on probation, pay a fine, be required to complete a DUI education course, and may lose her driver’s license unless she successfully challenges the decision at a hearing with the DMV,” he said.

After completing probation, finishing the required courses, and paying the penalties, her record could potentially be cleared.

Authorities will also review the circumstances surrounding the traffic stop and arrest to determine whether police had reasonable suspicion to stop her and sufficient grounds for the arrest. Those findings will ultimately influence whether charges are filed and what type of charges Spears could face.
