Hansi Flick criticizes VAR after defeat to Atletico Madrid

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has expressed his dissatisfaction with VAR after the 2-0 home defeat to Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

After the match, Flick criticized two key decisions: Marc Pubill’s handball after a shot by the goalkeeper and the red card to Pau Cubarsí.

The German coach said of Pubill’s handball: “We all make mistakes, but what’s the point of VAR if it’s not applying the rules? This is a penalty and a second yellow card – I just don’t understand it.”

He also raised questions about Cubarsí’s red card, stating reservations.

“I’m not sure if he touched Simeone enough to get a red card,” he underlined.

However, Flick remained optimistic about the return leg, as he still believes in a comeback.

“We lost 2-0, but we had some great chances. We still have a chance to come back in the second leg,” the German concluded.
