Robert Lewandowski’s future at Barcelona is reportedly in question, with Chicago Fire stepping up their efforts to sign the Polish striker, amid growing uncertainty over his role and contract situation at the club.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are open to keeping the 38-year-old, but only with a reduced salary and a more secondary role in Hansi Flick’s squad – a situation that has reportedly prompted Lewandowski to seriously consider his options.
It is reported that he has already discussed his concerns with his teammates, as he assesses whether to stay in Europe or continue his career abroad.
Interest from MLS is growing, with Chicago Fire leading the race. The American club is said to be willing to offer him a contract worth up to €15 million per season, with bonuses that could take the figure to €20 million.
However, Chicago Fire is not alone in the race: AC Milan and Juventus are also monitoring the situation, while clubs from Saudi Arabia have also made contact.
Meanwhile, Lewandowski’s agent, Pini Zahavi, is in Barcelona for talks with president Joan Laporta and is expected to meet with Hansi Flick, as well as sporting director Deco, before a final decision is made.
The Polish striker’s future is expected to depend heavily on Barcelona’s internal sporting plan for next season and the assessment that Flick will make of his role in the team, as the club is trying to balance financial restructuring with experience on the pitch.
