Famous Coach Now a Serious Candidate for The AC Milan Job

United States men’s national team coach Mauricio Pochettino has met with representatives of Italian club Milan regarding the vacant head coaching position.

The meeting took place last week, before the U.S. World Cup training camp, sources told The Athletic.

The 54-year-old has been identified as one of the possible candidates to succeed Massimiliano Allegri, who left the club earlier this week, while Andoni Iraola, the coach who is a free agent after leaving Bournemouth, is considered a leading candidate.

Milan is conducting a wide-ranging search, with the aim of realizing the owners’ ambition to revive the club and turn it not only into a force again, but also into one of the most attractive projects in world football.

The Argentine began his coaching career at Espanyol in Spain, where he spent nine years as a player in two spells, before moving to England for a 16-month stint at the helm of Southampton in the Premier League.

Pochettino then took charge of Tottenham, which he consolidated as a “top 4” club in the English elite and led to the Champions League final in 2019, only to leave less than six months later.

He moved to Paris Saint-Germain, where he won three trophies, including the Ligue 1 title in the 2021/22 season. Pochettino was sacked at the end of that season and then managed Chelsea in the 2023/24 season, before moving on to international football with the United States in September 2024.

A potential move to Milan would reunite Pochettino with US forward Christian Pulisic, while his international teammate Yunus Musah is also under contract with the club but spent this season on loan at Atalanta.
