Luka Modric failed to lead Milan to the Champions League, even though his team had a place in the table that guaranteed them entry into the prestigious European club competition for most of the season and until the final round of Serie A.
A defeat to Cagliari in the final round “relegated” Milan to the Europa League and raised the question of what will happen to Modric.
The Croatian captain has the option to extend his contract for another season, but it is doubtful whether he will do so, retire or choose a third option.
Ahead of him is the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, which begins on June 11 and where Croatia will play in the group stage against England, Panama and Ghana. Modric’s focus is on that, and his future prospects are in doubt.
Italian media wrote that Milan’s Champions League spot would mean Modric would stay at the club for another season, but now everything is unknown.
After the disappointing end for him and Milan, Modric contacted fans on the social network Instagram around midnight, making a post that is being seen as a farewell.
“A season with beautiful and difficult moments, but in the end we have to face the bitter reality and accept that it did not end the way we wanted. I would like to thank all the Milan fans from the bottom of my heart for the love, respect and great support they have shown me throughout the year. Forza Milan”, he wrote.
