The New York Knicks are the new NBA champions. Led by an exceptional Jalen Brunson, the team from the “Big Apple” defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94:90 in the fifth game of the finals and secured their first championship title after a 53-year wait.
Brunson was the absolute hero of the evening, scoring 45 points and setting a new club record for the most points scored by a Knicks player in an NBA Finals game.
The New York star carried the team on his shoulders in the second half, where he scored 29 of his 45 points, turning around a game that at many moments seemed to be going in the Spurs’ favor.
He finished the game with 14 of 27 field goals, four three-pointers, 13 free throws, and added three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
The Knicks struggled in the first half, scoring just 37 points and struggling against San Antonio’s stout defense. Victor Wembanyama dominated the basket with five blocks in the first half alone, as the Spurs went into the break with the lead.
However, everything changed after the break. Brunson began to take control of the game, scoring consistently at crucial moments and putting the Knicks back in the race.
San Antonio also had a stellar performance from young talent Dylan Harper, who scored a career-high 25 points, while Wembanyama closed out the game with a solid performance on both ends of the floor.
However, even their performances were not enough to stop Brunson. In the final minutes, the New York host scored the decisive points that gave his team the lead, while the Knicks maintained the advantage until the final whistle.
With this triumph, the New York Knicks bring the Larry O’Brien Trophy back to the city for the first time since 1973, ending a 53-year wait and writing one of the most important chapters in the club’s history.
At the center of the celebration was Jalen Brunson, the man who with his 45 points entered Knicks and NBA history forever.
