Ashley Young will retire from football at the end of this season, at the age of 40.
The former Manchester United captain has struggled this season due to a hip problem and has not played for Ipswich since January.
In an emotional statement, Young confirmed he will end his remarkable 23-year career at the end of the season.
Young began his career at Watford and made his first-team debut in 2003.
Then a promising winger, Young earned a move to Aston Villa in the summer of 2007. His performances at Villa Park attracted the interest of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Manchester United spent around 19.6 million euros to transfer Young in the summer of 2011.
In his third game for the club, he scored two goals and provided three assists in the Red Devils’ remarkable 8-2 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford.
Young was then part of the 2012/13 championship-winning team, the most recent United team to lift the Premier League trophy.
He made 261 appearances for the Red Devils, evolving over the years from an explosive winger to a full-back.
In the summer of 2019, Young was named club captain by then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, replacing departing teammate Antonio Valencia.
