A major step forward in green innovation has come from Greece, where the internationally acclaimed student team OCEANOS NTUA of the National Technical University of Athens has officially unveiled its first solar powered boat.
The project marks a new chapter in the development of sustainable and advanced maritime technologies. Founded in 2016, the OCEANOS team has already earned global recognition, including a first place victory at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. With this new achievement, the team confirms its continuous evolution in the field of clean energy.
The official presentation of the solar boat took place on 29 October 2025 at the War Museum in Athens.
What makes the vessel remarkable is its complete reliance on solar power. It operates entirely on energy from the sun, supported only by a small auxiliary battery used for ignition. The boat is equipped with high performance photovoltaic panels and advanced hydrofoils that lift the hull above the water’s surface. This dramatically reduces hydrodynamic resistance and increases energy efficiency.
The project stands as a powerful example of the dynamic presence of NTUA in the global academic community. It showcases a successful combination of scientific excellence, mechanical precision and strong environmental awareness.
With this innovation, Greek students are not only competing internationally but are also shaping the future of sustainable marine transport.
