Kylian Mbappe has made history at Real Madrid and La Liga, becoming the first player in 38 years – not named Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi – to win the “Pichichi” trophy in two consecutive seasons.
Despite missing a significant part of the season due to a nagging knee injury, the 27-year-old ended the 2025/26 season as the Spanish championship’s top scorer.
The French striker scored 25 goals in the Spanish top flight, two ahead of Mallorca’s Vedat Muriqi. Both scored in the final round, but Mbappe had created an advantage that practically secured the prize.
Mbappe topped the goalscoring charts with just 31 appearances, while Muriqi (second) and Osasuna’s Ante Budimir (third) each played 37 games.
Thus, he now counts two “Pichichi” in his first two seasons at Real Madrid, while in the 21st century only Messi and Ronaldo have won this trophy consecutively.
The last trophy by anyone other than the two icons came decades ago, when Hugo Sanchez won it four times in a row from 1984 to 1988 with a Real Madrid shirt.
However, despite his statistics and personal records, Mbappe has yet to lead Real Madrid to a major trophy. Since his arrival ahead of the 2024/25 season, Los Blancos have only won the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
In the main competitions, the Madrid team has consistently failed: in its debut season, Real Madrid finished second in La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, while being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
In 2025/26, the scenario was similar – second place in La Liga and the Super Cup, elimination in the round of 16 in the Copa del Rey and again reaching the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
