Manuel Neuer set an unwanted “record” in Bayern Munich’s defeat to PSG, a statistic that had never been seen before in this form.
The captain of the German football record holders not only conceded five goals in the 4-5 defeat in Paris, but according to official statistics, did not record a single save.
In other words, every PSG shot on target ended in a goal.
Neuer has become the first goalkeeper, since detailed statistics began to be kept in 2010, to concede at least five goals in a Champions League qualifying match without making a single save.
Although something like this may have happened earlier, complete data on blocked shots and interceptions only exists for the last 16 seasons.
Neuer was helpless on each of PSG’s goals, one of which came from the penalty spot.
“You saw the goals. It’s difficult to expect one of them. Twice it was very close, where maybe I could have reached or even touched the ball,” Neuer said.
The German goalkeeper was also in the right corner for the penalty that made it 3-2 just before the end of the first half.
“PSG were just very clinical in front of goal. We probably had a bit of luck too, with the ball hitting the post or with clearances on the end line,” he added.
The club from the French capital hit the post once again, when substitute Senny Mayulu fired into the crossbar from a tight angle in the 87th minute.
Officially, such shots do not count as attempts on goal.
