Spanish midfielder Pedri has made Barcelona history, breaking a record long held by club legend Lionel Messi.
The 23-year-old achieved this in Barcelona’s 2-1 victory over Osasuna at “El Sadar”, where he recorded his 200th appearance in a Blaugrana shirt.
At 23 years and 159 days, Pedri became the youngest player in the club’s history to reach 200 appearances, surpassing Messi, who achieved the feat at the age of 23 years and 227 days. The record was previously tied with Xavi Hernández.
Irreplaceable in midfield
Pedri’s durability is even more appreciated considering the competition in the midfield department, where Barcelona also has other talented names like Gavi at their disposal.
Coach Hansi Flick considers him a key part of his system, emphasizing that the team finds it difficult to function without his technical qualities and intelligence in the game.
However, the rapid development of young talents such as Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí suggests that this record could be challenged in the future by the club’s younger generation.
The team’s creative engine – Barcelona now wants 100 points
Pedri’s impact this season is also evident in the statistics. He has made 26 appearances in La Liga, scoring two goals and providing eight assists, being one of the main sources of creativity in Barcelona’s title race.
The team’s form has allowed the Catalans to build a 14-point lead at the top of the table, with four rounds remaining.
Barcelona now enters the final phase of the season with the aim of maximizing points in the remaining matches and approaching the prestigious figure of 100 points.
The schedule, however, remains difficult, as it includes El Clásico against Real Madrid, followed by matches against Deportivo Alaves, Real Betis and Valencia.
The title is in their hands, but maintaining the pace will be crucial to equal the historic achievements set earlier in La Liga by Jose Mourinho and Tito Vilanova.
