Real Madrid have begun shaping their transfer strategy for the summer of 2026, with club executives reportedly not planning any signings during the January transfer window.
The club’s main focus will be on strengthening the squad next summer, with two priority positions identified: a central defender and a central midfielder, aimed at improving overall control, balance, and stability in the team.
Despite investing around €120 million in the defensive line last summer, Real Madrid are still expected to return to the market in search of a new centre-back.
Midfield Plans Take Shape
In midfield, the club has assessed several options over recent months. However, according to Diario AS, Adam Wharton is no longer considered an option for Los Blancos, and there are no plans to pursue a move for the Crystal Palace midfielder.
Instead, Kees Smit has steadily gained the trust of Real Madrid’s decision-makers. Although there were initial doubts about whether the 19-year-old was ready for such a major step, his consistent performances with AZ Alkmaar have convinced the club that he is a genuine long-term option.
Vitinha Still the Dream Target
The club’s preferred target remains Vitinha of Paris Saint-Germain. However, with the French champions unlikely to sanction his departure, Smit is increasingly seen as a realistic alternative.
The Dutch midfielder is valued at around €60 million, and interest in him is growing. Clubs from the Premier League are also monitoring his situation closely, with Manchester United reportedly among those keeping a close eye on his development.
Real Madrid’s early planning underlines their intention to remain competitive at the highest level — with summer 2026 already shaping up to be a decisive transfer window for the Spanish giants.
