Roberto Martinez Shuts Down Cristiano Ronaldo Critics Ahead of The 2026 World-Cup

News

According to Reuters, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has come to the defense of Cristiano Ronaldo amid criticism over his inclusion in the 2026 World Cup plans, stressing that age should not be the deciding factor.

There is always criticism regarding the invitation of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, because according to them Ronaldo does not deserve an invitation to the World Cup.

However, Martinez quickly shut them down by declaring that “Age is just a number.”

“In the National Team we can measure exactly what is happening that day and then make a decision for the next day. You never look further than the next day.”

Martinez emphasized that in Portugal, Ronaldo is managed as a national team player, not as an iconic figure.

“We manage Cristiano Ronaldo who plays for the national team and aims to be in the team for 2026, not the iconic figure.”

“All players are at the same level in the National Team – when they play well and fulfill their role to help the team win, they are more likely to play than when they don’t. It’s that simple.”

Speaking about Ronaldo’s role, the coach also mentioned the five-substitution rule: “Now we have five substitutions. It’s almost like we have a starting team and a finishing team. There’s no difference.”

“There are different roles and Cristiano has always accepted his role.”
