The African player is only 24 years old, but heart problems have forced him to retire from football at a young age. Detailed medical checks have come back negative, with Mwepu learning the news he never wanted to hear.

His heart has inherited problems and the midfielder can no longer go down to the green fields. He has played in six Premier League games this year, recording an assist in the 5-2 win over Leicester City.

During his time playing in Austria with Salzburg, Mwepu was a “jump” and had the ability to cover over six different positions on the pitch. His friends called him “Computer” because of his skills in the middle of the field, accuracy and great intelligence.

Heart problems are becoming a big problem for footballers. Sergio Aguero was forced to retire without enjoying the adventure at Barcelona at all, while Christian Eriksen also faced heart problems at Euro 2020.
