Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs has reportedly been suspended from Champions League matches for the remainder of the season.
According to Diario Sport , UEFA made this decision after the Champions League match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, which ended in a 2-0 victory for the Madrid team.
During that match, a number of incidents sparked debate over the referee’s decisions, in particular a moment involving a potential penalty in the Atletico area, which did not result in a penalty being awarded.
There were also incidents in the match reviewed by the VAR system, including the moment that led to Pau Cubarsi being sent off.
Despite this, the referee has been included in the list of official referees for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico
