For the first time since the Champions League was renamed by UEFA in the 1992/93 season, neither Milan nor Juventus will participate in the same edition of Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
The historic absence of the two Italian giants was sealed in the final week of the Serie A season.
Milan fell outside the relegation zone after a 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari, ending the championship in fifth place with 70 points.
On the other hand, Juventus finished one point lower, in sixth position with 69 points, after a 2-2 draw against Torino.
As a result, both clubs were left out of the top four places that secure direct qualification to the Champions League, while Roma and Como secured the remaining tickets along with Inter and Napoli.
This is an unprecedented moment in the history of Italian football, as over the last 34 years at least one of the two legendary clubs had been part of every edition of the Champions League.
