Before the US Open, Serena announced that it was her last tournament and was defeated by Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round.
After victories over Danko Kovinic and Annette Kontaveit, Williams lost 5:7, 7:6 (4) and 6:1.
With that, she ended her career at the age of 41, after winning 23 Grand Slam titles and returning to tennis once after giving birth.
Even 27 years of career was left behind by the American woman who, together with her sister Venus, shaped the history of tennis.
