Xabi Alonso Regrets Taking Over Real Madrid

News

Real Madrid’s season has been disappointing and the situation worsened further this week, after Aurelien Tchouameni and Fede Valverde clashed physically, with the latter ending up in hospital.

Last summer started with great expectations, when Xabi Alonso took over from Carlo Ancelotti, but now that period seems far removed from today’s reality.

Alonso, who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen, was seen as the man to challenge Barcelona for the La Liga title and put Real back in serious contention for a 16th Champions League trophy. However, despite winning his first Clasico 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu, defeat to the Catalans in the Spanish Super Cup final sealed the end of his adventure.

According to a report by Cadena SER, Alonso left Real Madrid by mutual agreement just days after the final and now considers the decision to return to the Bernabeu a mistake.

The Spanish coach had rejected offers from clubs such as Liverpool and Bayern Munich before accepting the Real Madrid job in 2025, but now, according to the source, he believes it was not the right time to take on this challenge and that what has happened this season is clear proof.

The internal tensions at Madrid, which culminated in the incident between Tchouameni and Valverde, are said to have started after Alonso’s departure in January. Some players did not take the 44-year-old’s departure well, while others were happy with his departure.

Alonso could return to Real Madrid in the future, but for now that chapter seems closed. He is already considering his next move, which could happen this summer – and a return to Liverpool, another of his former clubs, is not out of the question if the Reds decide to part ways with Arne Slott.
