Atletico Madrid director Miguel Angel Gil has strongly criticised the La Liga refereeing system following the controversial VAR decision in a case involving Barcelona defender Gerard Martin.
The incident occurred when Martin’s red card was overturned after VAR intervention, a decision that angered the Madrid club’s management.
“When we see the footage and listen to the audio distributed by the Federation, the only thing we can do is feel ashamed. It is unacceptable that they allow us to hear their comments, completely contrary to how VAR should work, and nothing happens.”
The Atletico director stressed that VAR should not influence the interpretation of the main referee.
“The referee on the field should be responsible and make decisions by interpreting the intention of each player. VAR should only intervene to correct clear errors, not to decide in place of the main referee.”
Gil also criticized what he considers a lack of consistency in referee decisions in La Liga.
“It is not normal for identical situations to have different decisions made, for the criteria to change and for us not to know what to expect. This has happened to us in the last two weeks. It makes no sense.”
Meanwhile, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will face off again this midweek in the Champions League.
