Arne Slot’s position as Liverpool manager continues to be the subject of speculation following their Champions League exit, while two Reds players have been warned they could leave if Xabi Alonso takes over.
Despite winning the Premier League in his first season in charge, Liverpool are now certain to end this season without a trophy, following a crushing 4-0 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals.
Former player Jermaine Pennant believes Slot can succeed, but in the event of a change, he would prefer the appointment of Alonso.
“Personally, I think Slot can succeed, but if there was a change to be made, I would prioritise bringing in Xabi Alonso,” Pennant told SPORTbible .
“He knows the club, he has played for it and the fans would accept him immediately. There are a lot of players he knows and he knows how to get the best out of them. He did an incredible job at Bayer Leverkusen, where he won the championship, so he would be the ideal choice if the board decided in that direction.”
According to Pennant, if Alonso were to take charge, the first changes would come in the midfield.
He suggests that Cody Gakpo could leave, while Alexis Mac Allister could also be sold if a good offer comes along.
“He would need more energy in midfield, more dynamism. Gakpo is not very popular with the fans and has not been in good form.”
“Of the current players, these two could be the first on the list for departure,” he concluded.
