The Consequences of Trophyless Seasons Under Florentino Perez – Departures of Coach and Stars From the Team

News

Florentino Perez is the most successful president in Real Madrid’s history in terms of trophies.

In his two spells at the helm, the football team has won 37 titles, including seven Champions Leagues, a figure that accounts for around 30 percent of the club’s total trophies.

However, this statistic is not expected to increase in the 2025/26 season. In “Valdebebas” there is a belief that the team has enough quality not to end the year empty-handed, but the reality is heading towards a season without a single trophy – which has increased the president’s dissatisfaction with the overall performance.

Since taking office in June 2000, this will be the fifth season (if confirmed) that Real Madrid have finished trophyless under Florentino’s presidency. And history shows that each such season has brought major consequences: changes of coaches, the end of projects and the farewells of big names.

2004/05 – The “Fall” of the Galactics

The “Galactico” project had entered a crisis. Carlos Queiroz did not work, while the following season started with Jose Antonio Camacho, but he lasted only three games. Real Madrid was then led by Garcia Remon and Vanderlei Luxemburgo, but ended without any titles and far from the objectives.

2005/06 – Florentino’s resignation

Luxemburgo did not save the project the following season either. Then came López Caro, but the situation worsened and at the end of February 2006, Florentino Pérez resigned, ending that phase of the “Galacticos”.

2009/10 – Bitter comeback

Florentino returned to the presidency and began the second era with giant transfers: Cristiano Ronaldo, Leite Kaka and Karim Benzema, as well as Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa and Raul Albiol.

Manuel Pellegrini was appointed coach, but the season ended without a trophy. The consequences were immediate, José Mourinho was approached, while two icons like Raul and Guti left the club.

2020/21 – Zidane and Sergio Ramos’ farewells

After a very successful period where Real almost always won trophies, the pandemic season came without a title. Real Madrid lost the La Liga race until the end, were eliminated in the semi-finals of the Champions League and exited the Copa del Rey at home.

Then two major figures left, Zinedine Zidane and captain Sergio Ramos.

2025/26 – “Now what?”

After Ancelotti’s return, Real Madrid won important titles, but last season only two “consolation” trophies came (the European Super Cup and the Club World Cup).

Ancelotti left, Xabi Alonso was tried, and then Álvaro Arbeloa came along, but the current season is heading towards a trophyless end – unless a miracle happens in La Liga.

Within Real Madrid, the precedents are clear. For Florentino, trophyless seasons usually mean tough decisions, especially on the bench. And given the current situation, Arbeloa is unlikely to get the “second chance” that has only been given to some coaches in the past on rare occasions.
