Former England footballer Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after he was involved in a crash with his Lamborghini on the M3 motorway in Hampshire.
According to reports, the 31-year-old was stopped by police at around 9:00 a.m. on Thursday morning after his vehicle crashed into the side barriers of the highway. Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved in the incident and no one was injured.
Sterling, who currently plays for Feyenoord, was arrested at the scene and later released on bail while investigations continue.
Police suspect the former England winger of several serious offences, including driving while unfit due to drugs, dangerous driving, possession of a class C substance and refusing to provide a sample for testing.
Hampshire Police released a statement regarding the incident: “Shortly before 9am on Thursday, we received reports that a Lamborghini had collided with the barriers on the M3 southbound, near the Minley Interchange.”
“No other vehicles were involved and there were no reports of injuries.”
“The driver, a 31-year-old man from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit due to drugs, dangerous driving, possession of a class C drug and refusing to provide a sample. He has been released on bail pending further enquiries.”
Sterling began his illustrious career when he moved to Liverpool from QPR’s academy in 2010, aged 15. He then moved to Manchester City, where he won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and an FA Cup.
After less successful spells at Chelsea and Arsenal, he joined Feyenoord as a free agent in February.
At international level, Sterling has made 82 appearances for England and scored 20 goals.
