African shamans at the World Cup: How Ghana fans ‘cast a spell’ for the winning goal in the last minute

African national teams often bring to major tournaments not only their strong support but also local ‘magic’.

During the World Cup match between Ghana and Panama, broadcast cameras captured a very unusual moment.

In the 16th minute, a Ghanaian fan decided to perform a ritual right in the stands.

He took out a small container, poured a white powder into the palm of his hand, and blew it towards the field.

The interesting part was that this ritual apparently worked. Ghana struggled to find the back of the net against Panama throughout the match, but a decisive moment came towards the end of the match.

In the fifth minute of extra time (90+5′), Caleb Yirenkyi scored a late winning goal to secure his country’s first victory at the 2026 World Cup.
