Andy Robertson has reached an agreement to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, once his contract with Liverpool expires, according to recent reports.
The Scottish defender was very close to joining Spurs during the January transfer window, but the deal fell through after Liverpool failed to find a suitable replacement in time.
The Athletic initially reported that Tottenham are in “pole position” to sign Robertson at the end of the season, while Fabrizio Romano has added that there is already a verbal agreement to bring him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.
However, the deal is not yet guaranteed, as Robertson is waiting to see the outcome of Spurs’ battle for survival before putting his signature in. If Roberto De Zerbi’s side survive, then the deal is expected to be finalised.
West Ham United’s victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday has seen Spurs fall into the relegation zone, however they still have their fate in their hands and can climb out of this zone with a win over Sunderland on Sunday.
On paper, the left-back position doesn’t seem to be a problem for Tottenham. Destiny Udogie remains one of the most important names in the squad, while Djed Spence is a solid alternative, although he naturally plays on the right wing. Also, in January, youngster Souza was approached from Santos to build for the future.
It would be surprising if Spurs were to fully trust Robertson ahead of Udogie, but the situation is more complex. Udogie has struggled with injury this season, missing 19 games in all competitions and causing difficulties at the back.
Robertson could offer a high-level alternative, having played a similar role as a reserve at Liverpool this season, following the inconsistent form of Milos Kerkez.
There is even a possibility that Robertson could play alongside Udogye. Due to a lack of minutes under Arne Slot, the Scot has been used as an emergency centre-back at times this season and a more permanent move into that role would not be a surprise.
Even if there is no clear gap in the lineup for him, Robertson’s experience and professionalism would be a very valuable addition to the dressing room, especially in a period where the pressure is very great.
After two disappointing years, Spurs need experienced and calm players, capable of stabilizing the team and restoring the right direction. In this respect, Robertson represents everything Tottenham aspires to be.
