Former Barcelona defender Jordi Alba has recalled one of the most difficult moments of his career, the dramatic elimination by Liverpool in the Champions League semi-finals during the 2018/19 season.
Alba admitted that the 4-0 defeat at Anfield, after a 3-0 win in the first leg, was the worst night of his career and a heavy blow both in terms of sport and personally.
“The worst night was the one in Liverpool. That photo that was published… I wasn’t crying at half-time, I just didn’t feel good. I made a mistake on the first goal. We had won the first leg 3-0 and we shouldn’t have let such an advantage slip away,” Alba said.
He is convinced that Barcelona would have won the trophy if they had reached the final.
“I’m sure that if we had gone to the final, we would have won the Champions League,” declared the former Spain international.
Alba also revealed that the elimination at Anfield had a huge emotional impact on him, causing him to isolate himself for a long period.
“After the elimination in Liverpool, it took me a long time to leave the house. It was a very difficult period, both for the club and for me,” he concluded.
Liverpool’s historic upset of Barcelona remains one of the most memorable matches in Champions League history and one of the Catalan club’s biggest disappointments in the European arena.
