Barcelona reportedly established new contacts with the representatives of Borussia Dortmund defender Thomas Meunier, making him known that he is currently their big target to reinforce the right-back spot.
As quoted by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are hoping to close his signing immediately, especially after knowing that the player has asked the German team to let him leave for Barça.
But while everything is in place for his arrival, the key that would unlock the final piece remains the departures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Memphis Depay.
MD journalist Gabriel Sans writes that the duo’s exit is the last obstacle that Barcelona need to overcome before finalizing the Meunier operation.
As far as Dortmund are concerned, they have been made aware of Meunier’s desire to play for Barcelona. At 30 years of age, the defender feels it is his last chance to play for a big team, and he certainly does not want to let go of the opportunity.
However, with only a handful of days left in the transfer market, Dortmund are being receptive. But that’s completely primarily understandable because they will not have any time to sign a replacement.
In that regard, Barcelona might as well play the Sergino Dest card. It’s very much established that the American defender is no longer in Xavi’s plans, but Dortmund don’t want him either. However, lack of options might force them to accept the deal in the first place.
From Barcelona’s front, the team has already discussed personal terms with the player and it is expected that if signed, the 30-year-old would sign a three or four-year deal with the Blaugrana.
But before putting pen to the final agreement, everything hinges on the fact that whether or not Barcelona manage to sell Aubameyang and Depay. This is, in fact, a non-negotiable condition, as failure to do so would crush the Meunier operation too.
However, if everything goes according to plan, Meunier can be expected to travel to Barcelona this Wednesday to undergo the medical.
