Barcelona and Spain star Lamine Yamal has admitted he feared he could miss the 2026 World Cup after suffering an injury in the match against Espanyol in April.
The 18-year-old, who is considered one of Spain’s key figures for the tour of the United States, Canada and Mexico, is currently recovering from a hamstring injury.
Coach Luis de la Fuente had stated after the release of the guest list that players who would not be ready for the opening match would be able to return for the second match against Saudi Arabia. However, there were doubts that Yamal could miss that match as well.
Speaking to Marca from the Spanish national team training camp, the Barcelona striker revealed the moments of anxiety he experienced immediately after the injury.
“Yes, I remember exactly the moment I got injured. I was praying that it wasn’t something serious, maybe just a cramp, because the World Cup was so close. I knew it was a hamstring injury, something I had never had before. I was afraid that it could be serious, but also that it could be something less serious and that I would have a relapse that would cost me the World Cup,” Yamal said.
Although he would prefer to be in optimal shape from the start of the tournament, he admitted that the rest period could serve to recover his energy after a busy season.
“It’s true that playing in a World Cup gives you an incredible motivation. Mentally I feel like I haven’t played a single game all season and I can’t wait to make my debut in this tournament.”
Yamal also spoke about the pressure that accompanies him at this stage of his career, emphasizing that he sees it as an additional motivation.
“I like the pressure. When the standards are higher, your level also increases. If I had the same expectations as every other player, I probably wouldn’t be playing at the level I am today. I see it as a challenge and I really enjoy it.”

He added that he still finds it hard to believe his rapid rise to the football elite.
“In my mind it feels like I’ve been playing football for 10 years, but in reality it’s only been three. Four years ago I was playing with friends at the sports center, and now I’m going to play in a World Cup. It’s crazy, really unbelievable.”
Yamal is not the only concern for coach De la Fuente ahead of the tournament. Nico Williams is also continuing to recover from an injury after a difficult season, while Mikel Merino has returned to action after a long absence and is now considered ready to play.
