Manchester United “Dream” of Signing Aurelian Tchouameni

News

Manchester United appear to have entered a new phase. The club is trying to move away from a chaotic style of football and return to a more controlled, consistent and stable game.

In recent seasons, Casemiro has been a key part of the midfield. He brought experience, leadership and a winning mentality from Real Madrid to help United return to the silverware. However, his time at Old Trafford is coming to an end, as he is expected to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The Premier League is a very physical league and United now need a younger player in that role – someone who can handle high-level football every week and keep the midfield strong for the future.

A potential candidate to replace Casemiro is Aurelien Tchouameni. Therefore, it is worth seeing whether this transfer would make real sense for Manchester United.

Real Madrid sign Tchouameni as Casemiro’s replacement

The stories of these two players are closely intertwined. In the summer of 2022, Real Madrid made a big decision: they sold Casemiro to Manchester United for £60 million. Casemiro was part of one of the greatest midfield trios in history, along with Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

From 2015 to 2022, they won 14 trophies as the core of the team, including three consecutive Champions League titles (2016, 2017, 2018).

Real Madrid decided to sell him because they had already found a successor: they paid 80 million euros to transfer Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco. Florentino Perez is believed to have known that Casemiro’s physical peak would not last indefinitely, so Madrid refreshed the midfield at a time when the Brazilian was still highly valued on the market.

United won in the short term, Madrid in the long term

Manchester United immediately benefited. Casemiro was brilliant in his first season, helping the club reach two finals at Wembley. In the Carabao Cup final, he scored the opening goal in a 2-0 win over Newcastle, giving United their first trophy in six years.

He also played in the FA Cup final against Manchester City (2-1 loss), and was a key factor in finishing the season in third place in the Premier League.

But in the long run, Madrid emerged victorious: they replaced a 30-year-old with a 22-year-old. Now, United find themselves in a similar situation to Real’s four years ago – and they are looking at the very player who replaced Casemiro in Spain to replace him in England.

Why United wouldn’t lose quality with Tchouameni

According to statistical comparisons in the 2025/26 season, Casemiro and Tchouameni are relatively close in many indicators, which suggests that the Frenchman’s transfer would not be a step backwards for United.

However, Casemiro continues to have a huge impact, especially in attack: he has scored 9 goals this season, a very high figure for a defensive midfielder. He is dangerous from set pieces and often makes late runs into the area.

Tchouameni only has 1 goal, but his role is more focused on balance and control: he stays deeper, protects the center-backs and controls the space in front of the defense.

In passing, Tchouameni has a clear advantage with 91.4% accuracy, while Casemiro has 81.0%, which shows that the Frenchman is more confident with the ball and helps the team control the game better.

Even in defensive terms, the numbers are close: Casemiro has more tackles (84 to 59), but Tchouameni has more interceptions (36 to 28), showing a better ability to read the game and stop actions early.

He also commits fewer fouls (26 to 44), which means fewer dangerous shots for the opponent and less risk of cards.

Overall, both offer strong qualities in the same position: Casemiro brings experience and goals, while Tchouameni brings cleaner passing, positioning and stability. Their overall level is considered similar, so a move for Tchouameni to Old Trafford would be a smart move.

Carrick’s system makes Tchouameni an ideal target

Manchester United’s tactical direction has changed recently. Michael Carrick is currently interim manager and has reportedly done a great job since taking over in January. United were around seventh place but have climbed to third in the Premier League, moving very close to qualifying for the Champions League.

With these results, Carrick is moving closer to a permanent appointment and is said to have strong support from the players, fans and the board.

Under Carrick, United look more organised and balanced. They control the game better and are more consistent than in recent seasons. But for their system to work properly, they need a midfielder who is calm, intelligent and comfortable on the ball – which is why Tchouameni is seen as an ideal target.

The Frenchman is strong in the air and wins many duels with his head, something very valuable in the Premier League where many teams still rely on long balls and physical strikers.

Carrick also wants the team to build play through midfield confidently and quickly. Tchouameni is more controlled: he prefers simple and accurate passes, and is very good at playing against the opposition’s pressing. This helps players get the ball into better positions and keeps the team more stable.
