Oscars 2026 showdown: Will “Sinners” sweep the night or can “One Battle After Another” steal Best Picture?

News

The 2026 Academy Awards are shaping up to be one of the most competitive ceremonies in recent years, with two major films dominating the conversation: Sinners by Ryan Coogler and One Battle After Another by Paul Thomas Anderson.

Industry analysts believe Anderson’s film currently holds the edge for the coveted Best Picture award. However, Coogler’s Sinners enters the ceremony with the most nominations, an impressive total of 16, making it one of the most talked about films of the season.

Both directors are also chasing a historic moment in their careers, as neither Paul Thomas Anderson nor Ryan Coogler has ever won an Oscar for Best Director.

The race for Best Actor is also expected to be extremely tight. Michael B. Jordan and Timothée Chalamet are considered the frontrunners, but the final outcome remains uncertain.

The ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The broadcast begins at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time on ABC and will also be available to stream on Hulu.

Looking ahead, the Academy has already announced that starting in 2029 the Oscars ceremony will also be streamed on YouTube.

Comedian Conan O’Brien will return as host, promising a lively and entertaining show despite global tensions and heightened security measures surrounding the event.

Music will also play a key role in the ceremony. Two of the nominated songs for Best Original Song will be performed live: “I Lied to You” from Sinners and “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters.

Although the Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters has become one of the platform’s most watched titles, many experts predict that the Best Picture award will likely go to a traditional theatrical release rather than a streaming production.

With strong contenders, historic nominations and unpredictable races, the Oscars 2026 could deliver one of the most dramatic award nights in recent memory.
