News

The Portugal captain was not on his best day in front of goal in the final warm-up match before the 2026 World Cup.

Portugal scored a 2-1 victory over Nigeria at the ‘Magalhaes Pessoa’ stadium in Leiria, in the last friendly test before the start of its adventure at the 2026 World Cup.

The match was quite balanced, although the Portuguese dominated possession and created more scoring chances.

The winning goal for Portugal came in the 75th minute, when Francisco Conceiçao, after an assist from Joao Cancelo, sealed the triumph for the team led by Roberto Martinez.

As for Cristiano Ronaldo, the veteran striker played around 65 minutes, but failed to leave his mark on the goalscoring or assist charts.

The 41-year-old had several opportunities to convert, but was not at all accurate in front of goal, wasting a significant number of chances and developing one of his least effective performances on the eve of the World Cup.

At the 2026 World Cup, Portugal will compete in Group K, where they will face Colombia, Congo and Uzbekistan, while Nigeria failed to secure qualification for the final stage of the tournament.
