The name of 35-year-old Argentine goalkeeper Esteban Andrada has been in the spotlight in the sports media in recent days, but not in a good way.
The Real Zaragoza goalkeeper was sent off in the Aragonese derby of the Spanish second division against Huesca, and a video of him punching rival player Jorge Pulido went viral.
The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee deemed Andrade’s actions “violent and aggressive” and suspended him for 13 matches.
The Argentine apologized after the match. He said his actions “crossed the line” and apologized directly to the player he hit, Jorge Pulido, adding that he was ready to accept any punishment he received.
The El Espanol portal published an article revealing the life of Esteban Andradas, which is a story worthy of being made into a movie.
The tragedy that marked childhood
Andrada’s life changed completely when he was 12 years old. While other kids were dreaming of success in football, he had to deal with the death of his father, who died in a car accident. It wasn’t just an emotional blow.
His mother, Graciela, and five siblings were left in an extremely difficult financial situation. Esteban, then a small boy, realized that his hands would not only be used to protect himself from blows, but also to feed his family.
From vineyards to football fields
Before he felt the grass of ‘La Romareda’ or the mystique of ‘La Bombonera’, Andrada had experienced the harshness of the Mendoza sun. He worked for years as a grape picker, one of the hardest jobs in Argentine agriculture.
Working in the vineyard, today’s Zaragoza goalkeeper learned the meaning of physical sacrifice and patience. The hands that now wear professional gloves were strengthened by picking grapes to provide food for his family. His priority was never luxury. With his first big salary, he fulfilled his promise and bought his mother a house.
The kidnapping that changed everything
If poverty and the loss of his father were the first major challenges, a new obstacle appeared in 2014. While playing for the Lanus team, Andrada was the victim of a kidnapping. The kidnappers held him for two hours, demanding a ransom from his family.
He was released unharmed after a ransom was paid, but the incident left a lasting mark on his personality. From then on, Andrada became more withdrawn, fiercely protective of his privacy, and far removed from the excesses that often accompany success in football.
A story about sustainability
Today, when Esteban Andrada steps into goal, he doesn’t just save shots. Behind each of his saves is a man who has survived a family tragedy, who knows what hard physical labor is, and who managed to remain calm while his life was in the hands of kidnappers.
His story is a story of resilience, of a man who, despite all the blows, on and off the field, always knows how to bounce back, Spanish media conclude about Andradan, who has played for Lanus, Arsenal Sarandi, Boca Juniors, Monterrey and Real Zaragoza during his career.
He has four caps for the Argentine national team and Transfermarkt values his value at 400,000 euros.
