“We Won’t Take Any Risks” – Portugal HC Confirms Star Player Will Miss The First Match

News

Portugal will be without one of its most important players in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup against DR Congo, after Ruben Dias was ruled out of the match due to injury.

The news was confirmed by coach Roberto Martinez, who announced that the center back has not yet fully recovered and the technical staff does not want to risk his physical condition.

“He is still not fully recovered and we will not take any risks,” Martinez declared before the Group K match.

Dias’ absence is a significant blow for Portugal, as the Manchester City defender is considered the leader of the defensive department and one of the team’s key figures.

Just a few days ago, midfielder Matheus Nunes had expressed hope that his teammate would be ready for the first match, but recent developments have led medical staff to recommend maximum caution.

Portugal begins their World Cup adventure against DR Congo in Houston, in a group that also includes Colombia and Uzbekistan.

Despite Dia’s absence, Martinez will have captain Cristiano Ronaldo at his disposal, who is expected to lead the team in their attempt to start the tournament with a victory.
