The family of Granit Xhaka, the Albanian star of Arsenal and Switzerland, has a past that resembles many Kosovar families.
His father, Ragip Xhaka, an activist of the Albanian cause, was a political prisoner in the former Yugoslavia. His past continues to be one of the epicenters that gives strength to the footballer Xhaka.
He even confessed this himself in an interview for “The Guardian”.
“As his son, the story is something that touches me very deeply – it is forever, forever in my heart,” said Xhaka. “To describe my father properly, you have to really understand him. It’s so tragic. Sometimes I ask him: “Tell me again,” but I don’t think he tells me everything. There were always moments of silence when they felt that he had made something up and couldn’t get it out. Maybe it was too much and he didn’t want us to know his pain.”‘
He even said that his father is a proud Kosovar.
“He was a proud Kosovar and thought that Kosovans had the right to exist. He was standing up for their rights, and they were basic democratic rights – necessities, such as the right to vote. He wasn’t the only one. There were other people arrested, including my aunt, who was imprisoned for many years. He was sentenced for 15 years. It was all political,” continued Mr. Xhaka.
