Julian Alvarez becomes the fifth-highest Argentine scorer in Champions League history

News

Atletico Madrid’s 26-year-old striker Julian Alvarez scored his 24th career goal in the Champions League during the decisive 2-0 away win against Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the 2025/26 season.

Alvarez opened the scoring with a magnificent free kick, cementing his name in the history of Argentine stars in Europe’s elite competition.

With 24 goals (16 for Atletico and 8 for Manchester City), Alvarez has now moved into fifth place among all Argentine players in the tournament’s history.

While he shares this milestone with Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria, he achieved this figure in far fewer games.

Only four Argentines have scored more in this competition: Lionel Messi (129 goals), Sergio Aguero (41 goals), Hernan Crespo (25 goals) and Lautaro Martinez (25 goals).

Alvarez has also cemented his place in Atletico’s history, currently ranking as the club’s second-highest scorer in the competition, behind only Antoine Griezmann .
