Official: Real Madrid Announce Elections for New President

News

Real Madrid has officially decided to set the electoral process in motion, as promised at the beginning of the week by current president Florentino Perez.

Rival candidates will have only nine days to present their candidacies and campaigns.

Perez called a surprise press conference Tuesday night to announce that he would call elections, challenging those who want to remove him from office to run against him.

At one point he declared that he would only leave the club when someone defeated him in the elections, while at another he said that he would have to be kicked out “with bullets.”

On Thursday morning, Real Madrid officially confirmed that they will hold elections. From May 14 to May 23, candidates must officially present themselves, the latter date coinciding with Real’s final home game of the season, against Athletic Bilbao. The following day, the candidates will be formalized as part of the voting process.

No date has been set for the vote yet, with the club explaining that this will only be determined if there is more than one candidate. In the last four elections in which Perez has stood, he has run unopposed.

On Wednesday it was reported that one of the rivals Perez had publicly challenged to run, Enrique Riquelme, was considering the possibility.

However, just minutes before Perez was due to give an interview to El Chiringuito , Riquelme announced that he had sent Perez an open letter published in Marca , asking for more time to build a candidacy.
