Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo has spoken openly about the mental health issues that forced him to retire from football mid-season.
Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca, the Uruguayan defender described the moment he realised he needed help.
“These things all accumulate. Not just at the football level, because there are also situations that stem from childhood and just keep growing,” Araujo initially revealed.
“That incident against Chelsea was key. Because I already had a yellow card and I couldn’t continue like this.”
“It was clear that my mind was not right. I remember going into the dressing room alone and saying: ‘That’s it’.”
“I realized I had to talk to my wife, to the club and ask for help. It was the best decision, or one of the best decisions of my life,” the Barcelona star concluded.
